I’m certain I over estimated my ability but went for it anyway, keeping at the back of the pack slow and constant, for a little while I kept up with a boy and his father, quite happy just to plod along behind them, but eventually the legs began to protest and I was forced to slow down.

every one was really supportive all the way round, other runners making comments,marshals cheering it was great, at one stage my leg was so so sore, I thought a minute or so of walking would do me good, but walking hurt more than running even though I was running slower than some people walk

this is crossing the finish line, it 2hrs and 12 minutes, to wild applause….. don’t mistake that look for smiling, my legs were in pain and even though it doesn’t look it I was running , too bad its not a video

the drive home was interesting to say the least, my whole right leg threatening to cramp every time i switched between brake and accelerator a bag of ice on the floor to ease the ache in my ankle when I got the chance

I will most definitely enter other Sri Chinmoy events, fruit and Pancakes provided at the finish line great atmosphere …… however I think Ill stick with races between 4 and 8k for a while yet

unfortunately I have no photos from the event, but have stolen some from the She Runs Facebook page

 it was AWESOME, an event organised by Nike, for women only !

13kilometers around centennial park, the atmosphere was awesome , big inflated balls everywhere lit up, on the course they were used as Kilometre markers

along the course there were 4 drink stations, which I thought was awesome considering for a 5-6k there is usually only one,

there were DJs lights in trees, trees wrapped in pink , flame throwers,

the last kilometer the marshals all mentioned how far to go

“keep it up girls only 1 k to go”

“you’re doing great only 500meters”

“great job girls, watch your step here, only 300 meters to go”

that’s where I picked up the pace a little

“that’s great keep that pace your doing well only 200 meters to go”

“keep it up girls almost there only 100 meters”

that’s where I started to sprint, frightening a couple of girls in front of me, around the hall of industries a quick wave top mum and dad and into the door, which I though was the finish line then looked up and saw the finish sign maybe 20 metres inside,

it was so so so hot in there with all of the bodies already inside celebrating their finishing I felt the tears welling up as I continued on , struggling to breath let alone function, I crossed the line and was handed a she runs the night branded aluminium bottle full of water

I wandered around a bit picked up a protein shake,

took my shoes off stretched a bit put my tracksuit on then wandered out to find mum and dad and go back to their house where I sat in the bottom of the shower for a bit then crawled into tip boy’s bed hoping he didn’t randomly come home drunk as he has been known to occasionally do, though at the moment I believe he is on a detox

a little after 10pm I received an SMS saying my gun time (being the time it took me from the first starting gun at 7pm to the finish was 1:52:44

in the morning mum offered me a spa while she made breakfast who am I to refuse, I had to fish a little frog out first and he kept me company from the edge for quite a while

tonight the chip times (the time from crossing the start to crossing the finish)became avaliable

1:46:34, much better than I had hoped for being that my hope was to finish within 2 hours

tomorrow I’ll be running my first Sri Chinmoy 16k I didn’t really think enough before signing up for that one  and now I don’t want to waste the entry even if I have to hobble the whole thing so I’m going regardless of aches and pains, I’ll be happy to finish that one no matter how it happens

And sometimes you just can’t help but listen

this morning after dragging myself out of bed on the 5th alarm at 5am I was dressed and out the door by 515 and just arriving at the ferry at 520 only to see the ramp being raised and it pulling out… Damn, sign 1 that i shouldn’t go to work today

then driving along I find myself nodding as in falling asleep…. possibly sign 2 ? ….. I decided to stop at the first servo and get some “V” energy drink which at the moment comes with a smart phone armband (win win )

an across the radio comes, there has been a fire in a commercial complex at this morning Dural , flames coming within 20 meters of petrol pumps, the service station and surrounding houses have been evacuated …. fantastic, hopefully its not the servo I was aiming for

Driving through Dural, a slight smell of smoke? nah probably just imagining it because I know there’s been a fire in the area

around the bend and Bang the road is covered in trucks with flashing lights, then I see the witches hat and the Ute parked in the middle of the road directing traffic into the nearest turn off…. Damn ….. all take that as a shouted, DONT GO TO WORK

so  ring in sick explain the situation, ill be up to 2 hrs late by the time i get there etc etc etc and go home ….. sometimes you are being told something, sometimes its ok to ignore, others, its just not worth it

along our street, up the great north road, down shepherds gully road and back

on Sunday I finally did it
now I knew Shepherds Gully road would be rough, being that it’s marked with dashes on most maps and not at all on others, But I wasn’t expecting to come across the true beauty that it is

and to take a better camera with me, to share the ruins of previous attempts at a decent road before it was abandoned in the late 20′s or early 30′s……. sometimes I love living in such a rich historical area, not that there wasn’t a lot of history in the old area, it had just been built on top of with very little evidence left

there were the Alcos, one who said his name actually is Al Coe not sure if it’s true but ok, the members of the ‘C’ club we suspect there are a few around more than let it be known, the quietly spoken copper (not sure I’m comfortable with him but seems nice enough) with his Nurse wife who got through 2-3 bottles of sparkling red by herself ….. they left early
and the Blended family, only one child with them, conveniently around the princesses age

so while the Smalls played on the driveway and hid around the small yard the adults talked and drank…… I feel I may need to call in sick tomorrow with a case of too many bubbles

The talk was great, stories of the area, apparently the road once went through where our carport now stands and salvage is a good profession to be in
Bill recieved many bottles of alcohol and put all of them up to share, a pretty good Barbecue cooked for dinner

after it got dark I left the boy there and brought the Princess home gave her a bath in not the best looking water (think the tank is a bit low)

got her dressed, and she insisted on sleeping in her Tent, a kiss good night and “could you please close the door because I don’t like the sound of the crickets” and she tucked herself under my old camp blanket and went to sleep

The boy came home somehow and in a very drunken state, he was not amused and insisted that it was poor parenting to let the child sleep on the floor….. and that I should put a robe on before putting the child into her bed…. I ignored the robe comment but knowing what he’s like when Drunk went about putting her to bed around the Boy who was trying to make her bed with fresh sheets which only needed a doona or blanket thrown over it to be considered made as I’d put the fresh sheets on with the intention of her going to bed before she insisted on sleeping on the floor in her tent

then I look at the people from DPIfitness, they do things like triathlon, as well lifting heavy things…… now my understanding of triathlons is that it is pretty much pure cardio work, obviously strength helps but the events themselves, well…. …… they also use Paleo as a template for what the eat but not as a full life thing

Now I understand the reason for this to be that in Palaeolithic times people ran because they were hungry and chasing food or because they were avoiding being food, so your body produces a stress response, which is fair enough, we are also encouraged to reduce stress in life all in the interest of hormone balance

but none of this accounts for… what if you feel the urge to run, be it caused by stress in life or threat of sabre tooth tiger is it better to run that stress off. I know myself i have quite a bit of stress in life, and often feel the urge to run, don’t care were to or for how long, just to get out there and put one foot in front of the other leaving my worries behind me as fast as I can, though sometimes I take my worries with me and sort them out as I go

seriously  no amount of lifting weight (which i can’t do at the moment ) will ever replace for me the stress relief that a k or 5 gives though it also makes me feel good but in a different way

on top of all that, how else does one train for something like a Tough Mudder, surely people don’t go from doing half hour Tabata sessions or what ever other sprint style work they do to running a 20k event, yet I’ve seen it blogged about in blogs that discuss keeping Cardio to a minimum

so I wonder if the true meaning is to not ‘Do Cardio” for the sake of doing cardio but if you enjoy running up to 5-10 k every now and then it’s ok but as soon as it becomes a chore perhaps its time to stop doing it, an I wonder how does this relate to the persistance hunters of africa or the Tarahumara of south America who both seem to do quite well despite running great distances fairly regularly

and then there is the food, I see some blogs that are strict as, and the writer appears to never let a piece of grain fed meat, legume, dairy product or sugar, cross their lips ever, they ask awkward questions at restaurants and shop at farmers markets and only buy the best of the best (the first I’m too shy to do, the second not rich enough) yet some high profile blogs talk about enjoying the odd burrito or commercially made Easter egg from how I read it as being good for the soul, basically, it’s no good being 100% strict with your diet at all times if you are feeling deprived or left out as a result, back to the 80-20 approach. Which for me means, I do the best that I can, if i can get good quality grass-fed beef (organic or otherwise) I’m over the moon, I occasionally will treat myself to Organic Pastured eggs I buy vegies and fruit and do my best to consume them, but in my Coffee, which in most cases I’m down to one a day I like to have milk, and occasionally I enjoy the odd burger bun and all or a go quality (as in well flavoured non chain) slice of pizza or 10, I may pay for it later with not feeling fantastic but really, what’s living if you can’t enjoy a fun meal with friends

I was reading somewhere recently that this is a natural thing, people aren’t meant to sleep for 8hrs straight, there are household manuals and articles from the 16 and 1700′s talking about the first and second sleep (apparently sex is more enjoyable after the first sleep)

I wonder if my early morning waking is a throwback to way back when, before we were told to sleep in straight blocks. I wonder what it was like to change, did large groups take up the practise? did Drs orders start to suggest sleeping all night? did we just start working more and differently so crashing for 6-8hrs became the norm because everyone was exhausted?

then I wonder if it’s the shift work, though generally when I wake my going back to sleep time, if I get the chance before the alarm sounds, coincides with the time of night on nightshift that it gets harder to keep my eyes open
